Mar 19, 2015 - 12 Shares. Symantec ditches Backup Exec 2012 Release 2. Backup Exec 12.5 could not perform an Inventory Job against a single-loader tape drive. Windows Server 2012 Release 2 (R2); Windows 8.1; Mac OSX 10.9.
Here is the solution courtesy of: Reconfigure the device in Backup Exec: 1. From Backup Exec Devices Right Click the device/library Properties Uncheck 'Enable device for backup Exec' Right click and delete the device. Power cycle the device and the server 3. From: Program Files VERITAS Backup Exec NT 4. Run tapeinst.exe 5.
Install Veritas tape drivers 275676 6. Check the results.
For some reason, when I restarted the Server, it must have loaded the wrong tape driver. I ran the tapeinst.exe app and everything went back to normal. I did not have to delete the library or tape drive, reinstall the drivers, restart services or reboot the server. Life is great:). I think it's because a job didn't complete properly - and left the device in a locked/in-use state.
I was just experiencing the same problem (not my first time with this issue). I stopped all the services - and opened windows explorer to C: Program Files Symantec Backup Exec Catalogs SERVERNAME - and deleted out the most recent.FH and.XML files that comprise the most recent catalog files. Restarted the services - and I can use the device. Seems like I've been using this as a fix since Seagate owned Backup Exec. At least it works. Okay I had a similar problem here is the background we have Symantec Backup Exec 12 with Tape drive and we experienced a couple of hard power failures in our building. Once during a backup after that the device showed constantly in use regardless of the action I took.
I did the following the positive results 1. Stopped all backup services 2. Ejected Tape 3.
Deleted Device from Device Pool 4. Powered off/Removed Power (about 5 minutes) 5. Powered on device 5.
Restarted Services 6. Reinstated Device 7 Placed Media All seems good now!
This is how you would install the Symantec drivers: 1. Tools - Wizards - Device COnfiguration Wizard 2.

Next (shows you a summary of your devices, be it B2D, autoloaders, libraries etc). Click Next Again. Choose the option to 'Install tape device drivers', and click Next. This brings up another wizard, and you can click Next. Click Next at the USB device drivers warning.
Make sure the first option (Use Symantec drivers for all supported tape devices' is selected, and that the Additional options has 'Use Plug and Play drivers for Windows 2000 or later' selected (might not need it, but I keep it on). Click Next, and let your installation run. When it detects your tape drive and asks to install the drivers, choose the option to allow. You MIGHT need to reboot your server, so be aware of that. If you want the latest device drivers, which isn't a bad thing, use the links above to get them. Load them like a normal installation, which installs them into BE, and then do the above.
